About us.

We’re AD/01, the tech studio that builds the future of food retail. Whether it’s in-store aisles, online baskets, or behind-the-scenes operations, we innovate the daily food experiences for farmers and families, grandmas and greengrocers, and pickers and packers alike.

We’re part of the Ahold Delhaize network, one of the world’s largest global food retail groups and a leader in both supermarkets and e-commerce. With 19 strong local brands in Europe, the United States, and Indonesia, we create a meaningful difference for our customers, our people, and the world around us. And we’re looking for the freshest minds excited to create the recipe for change.

The studio that builds the future of food retail.

Why do it with us?

We make sure you have all the tools and support you need.

We're a welcoming group of code crunching comrades.

We tap into the extensive capabilities of our Ahold Delhaize network.

What does this mean for you?

Your new role and environment.

Our Engineering Enablement Department has a purpose to accelerate our teams worldwide. We strive to provide teams with a set of tools and services to enable them to unlock their full potential. In short, we enable them to deliver quality customer value quickly and autonomously. The tools and services we provide are built with and for our engineering community.

As an engineer in engineering enablement platform (EEP), you build products and platforms for our engineers. You contribute directly to creating a state-of-the-art, self-service eco-system of products and automation. This is a mission you will not take on solo, but as a full-fledged member of the enablement team. Following Inner-Sourcing principles, you will work with users and maintainers throughout the whole organization to fit your ideas into the bigger picture: Accelerate our product teams, so they can deliver quality customer value quickly and autonomously.

Our product:

Duplo is a self-service platform for cloud resources, which enables your team to easily deploy, maintain and remove cloud resources autonomously.

We provide a catalog of ready-to-use infrastructure code ("building blocks") that you can choose from to get things up-and-running in no time!

Key responsibilities of your role.

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for complex database issues, conducting in-depth analysis and resolution for performance, deadlock, and connection challenges.
  • Administer, monitor, optimize, and secure the PostgreSQL database fleet across Azure and Kubernetes environments.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to engineering teams on database design, querying, indexing, and performance tuning best practices.
  • Maintain effective monitoring, alerting, and backup/recovery strategies for critical database systems.
  • Contribute to the design and maintenance of reusable cloud infrastructure components using Pulumi  and Terraform, focusing on database provisioning.
  • Collaborate with platform and application teams to establish inclusive database standards, security policies, and operational procedures.
  • Evaluate and recommend new database technologies and features to enhance platform capabilities.
  • Automate routine database administration tasks to improve efficiency.
  • Investigate and support MongoDB and Redis instances as needed.

What’s in it for you?

We ask a lot. (We’re looking for the best, after all). But we offer a lot, too.

So, what do we have in store for you? We offer flexible hours and a hybrid working model, allowing you to work both from home and at the office. We provide competitive benefits to support health, well-being and your professional growth. This includes: a significant budget on benefit platform and a yearly bonus. At AD01 we welcome everyone, just the way you are, and encourage individual growth with valuable opportunities and a worldwide across-brand network.

Requirements.

We think you’ll be best geared for success if you can meet the following requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator, with a strong focus on PostgreSQL, in a major cloud environment (Azure highly preferred, AWS/GCP experience valuable).
  • Proven expertise in database performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting complex database issues in production environments.
  • Solid understanding of database internals, concurrency control, transaction management, and high availability concepts.
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) concepts and managing databases within these environments (e.g., using operators like cloudnative-pg is a plus).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools we use Pulumi with TypeScript but Terraform is also relevant.
  • Experience with MongoDB administration is a plus. You like being in complex environments where not everything is clear yet.
  • You have a collaborative, pro-active spirit, working closely with cross-functional teams to gather feedback and continuously enhance the platform based on user insights and best practices.
  • You enjoy coaching other engineers on the team and helping them elevate the quality of their code to the next level.

It goes without saying that so-called ‘soft skills’ are just as important as their ‘hard’ cousins. We highly value:

  • Experience working within a matrix-style structure with international teams
  • Provide hands-on, expert level technical assistance to developers
  • Be flexible, reliable and have a true hands-on mentality
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player; involves others, shares knowledge and seeks opportunities for cross functional working and collaboration
  • Creative; identifies solutions and selects the best combination of practices by taking an innovative approach to problem solving
  • Builds trust with colleagues, clients & vendors
